Written by

2012-08-02-Substance-2 webRounding out the 2012 MODE Island Luau musical lineup is York-based rock-reggae band the Substance. “We are self-taught musicians that love reggae,” said guitarist and lead singer Tim Dougherty. “We love to create positive vibes through music.” The band’s first single Make Something has been gaining popularity online and is currently featured on 98ROCK in Baltimore. This summer the Substance is constantly touring in promotion of the single and their upcoming debut album, which will be officially released later this year. “Our concert schedule is filling up fast,” said Dougherty. “We will be all over PA, Maryland, and New Jersey. We love playing anywhere there is a great crowd with high energy.”

The Substance’s sound is a combination of reggae vocals with rock influences, similar to acts such as Sublime and 311. “We blend just the right amount of rock into our reggae sound to keep you moving. Our main focus is reggae, but we have a lot of other influences,” explained Dougherty. “Our music has hip-hop, rock, punk, and ska all mixed in with a good vibe.”

The Substance will be performing their unique blend of reggae at the 2012 MODE Island Luau on August 19 starting at 3PM on City Island. The Substance are also currently available for bookings, and can be reached via email at For concert dates, streaming audio, photos, videos and more visit the Substance’s Facebook page at and find them on
