One of the highlights of this year’s Millennium Music Conference is the Friday night performance That Girl, a six-piece group from Harrisburg known for their harmonic singing and soulful lyrics. “Our music could be described as what you would probably hear when sirens would sing in order to lure sailors to their lair,” said Janessa Suguitan, the band’s lead singer and lyricist. That Girl was formed through the Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center’s weekly Open Mic Night, where Suguitan began performing as a solo singer/songwriter. “My musical background started 3 years ago in California while being inspired & taught the dynamics of real soul-enriching songs by Wanda Vaughn of the Emotions & her son Warren,” said Suguitan.
After an impressive series of solo sets, Suguitan was approached by singers Arielle Lacey and Ally Phenicie, and the three began performing as a trio with Phenicie on keyboards. They were soon joined by guitarist Adam Silvetti, bassist Adam Bustin and drummer Shane Blocker and began practicing together. “Everyone agreed after the first rehearsal that this was something to invest in,” said Suguitan. “Then voila! Presto! Magic! That Girl was born.”
The group can still regularly be found performing in Midtown Harrisburg, but they have started touring throughout the state in support of their full-length debut album, due out in Spring 2013. “HMAC is kind of our home, but we like to travel and meet as many new people as possible,” said Suguitan. Upcoming shows for That Girl include Elizabethtown, Lemoyne and New Hope. “Shows where we meet new bands of exceptional talent are always some of the best for us, but we always give our shows the highest of energy no matter what the situation.”
That Girl will be performing as part of the 2013 Millennium Music Conference on Friday, February 15 at 11:00 PM at Liquid 891 in Harrisburg. To hear songs from their upcoming album, visit ReverbNation.com/ThatGirlBand and for more information on upcoming shows visit Facebook.com/ThatGirlIs.
