Theatre Harrisburg presents the 2006 Tony Award-winning musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone, on stage at Whitaker Center in downtown Harrisburg. This production, known as a musical within a comedy, pays homage to the great American music of the Jazz Age. The host of the show, known only as Man in Chair, is a middle-aged, asocial musical fan, who listens to a treasured record album of his favorite show, The Drowsy Chaperone. Soon after, his studio apartment is transformed into the impressive set of the fictional 1928 musical. Throughout the entire production, Man in the Chair makes dry comments on everything happening around him, including all of the zany characters, glitzy costumes, show-stopping choreography and of course, the inevitable happy ending.
The Cast of the Drowsy ChaperoneTheatre Harrisburg's production of The Drowsy Chaperone stars Thomas Hostetter as Man in Chair, Amy Rosenberry as the titular chaperone, Marisa Keener as Janet, and Russ Reed as Robert. Steven Flom serves as both director and choreographer for this production. He and music director Gregg Mauroni are both veterans of some of Theatre Harrisburg's biggest recent hits including the local premiere of the musical Curtains in 2010 as well as The Sound of Music and Annie. Paul Foltz created the over-the-top costumes and Nels Martin designed the transforming sets.
The Drowsy Chaperone opens Friday, February 1 at Whitaker Center, located at 222 Market Street in Harrisburg. During opening weekend, tickets are only $15 for all three performances. All of the following shows will then be $20, $29, and $35. Tickets may be purchased online at WhitakerCenter.org, by calling 214-ARTS, or visiting the box office in person. The performances are scheduled for February 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16 and 17. Show times are Thursday at 7:30 PM, Fridays at 8 PM, Saturday, February 2 at 4:00 PM, Saturday, February 9 & 16 at 8:00 PM, and Sundays at 2:00 PM. This production is sponsored by Capital BlueCross.
