Celebrating Harrisburg Cemetery with Historic Harrisburg Association

Written by

Harrisburg Cemetery, 521 North 13th Street

Cemetery-2614The Historic Harrisburg Association and the Penn State Dauphin County Master Gardeners will host a celebration of the Harrisburg Cemetery on Saturday, April 13 from 1-4PM. Rain date is Sunday, April 14 from 1-4PM. The cemetery was officially established in 1845 and was originally known as Mount Kalmia Cemetery. It is a great example of the Antebellum-era park-like cemetery movement which combines beautiful flowering trees such as the cherry and crab-apple with the graves of many notable historical figures. “The Harrisburg Cemetery is a unique historical landmark often forgotten in the midst of North Allison Hill,” said Executive Director of the Historic Harrisburg Association, John R. Campbell. “We hope by celebrating the history, and landscape architecture that the community will have a greater appreciation of this historic landmark." This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Guests will be able to visit the 140 graves of soldiers of the Grand Army of the Republic along with 15 Confederate prisoners of war. Other notable burials include Simon Cameron, United States Secretary of War for Abraham Lincoln, buried in 1889, and George Wolf, the 7th Governor of Pennsylvania buried in 1840. The self-guided tour planned for the event was developed by Penn State Dauphin County Master Gardeners who will be present to answer questions and assist visitors. Refreshments and entertainment will also be available. The event is free and no pre-registration is required.
