Harrisburg - Susquehanna River Trail

Written by Monday, May 21, 2012 • 2:15 am
Harrisburg, Dauphin County

City Island is the most famous and accessible island in the Susquehanna River, but nearly 2 dozen smaller islands are accessible to anyone wishing to camp or just spend a day in the wild. The Susquehanna River Trail is a 51-mile stretch of river from Sunbury to Harrisburg, including 22 campsites on 20 river islands that are designated for day use or primitive camping. They are maintained by members of the Susquehanna River Trail Association, who encourage you to take a tour of the beautiful and historic islands this summer. The Susquehanna River Trail Association promotes sustainable use and stewardship of the river, and the "Leave No Trace" philosophy of interacting with the trail. The islands can be reached by canoe or kayak, with set landing points and campsites outlined on the SRTA's island maps. For more information on the trail, including safety precautions, points of interest, guides and island hopping events, visit:
