The second annual Jersey Mike Rock + Run 5K is scheduled to be held at noon on Saturday, April 19, 2014, on City Island and Riverfront Park in Harrisburg.
Last year the event was put together to raise money for the K+L Guardian foundation, a college fund for the children of concert promoter “Jersey” Mike Van Jura, who passed away from a heart attack in 2012 at the age of 36. Van Jura played a huge role in keeping local music alive and thriving in Central Pennsylvania, and those closest to him founded this 5K as a way to keep his memory alive and to give his children with a future. This year’s race will not only benefit the K+L Guardian foundation again, but a new family will be helped as well. Van Jura’s children, Kaiya and Lennon, will help present the family that has recently suffered the loss of a parent.
The Rock + Run is organized by RunPositive, a local non-profit organization comprised of residents Jay Bowser, Josiah Ferris and Sarah Bozich. The trio wanted the event to not only to help Van Jura’s children, but also to offer a heart-healthy activity for those who have lost a parent or loved one.
For those interested in walking or running in the 5K, sign up online at www.jerseymikerun.com. RunPositive will also host a number of Happy Hour events at downtown Harrisburg restaurants for in-person registration. Updates and Happy Hour locations can be found on RunPositive’s Facebook page and Twitter account, @RunPositiveOrg. The event will use the hashtag, #JM5K. Registration will also be available beginning at 10 a.m. on the day of the race.
After the race, there will be a rock n’ roll show featuring live bands at Ceoltas Irish Pub’s on the second and third floors, The Raftery Room and The Thatch. Ceoltas Irish Pub is located at 310 North 2nd Street in downtown Harrisburg.
