Jersey Mike Rock + Run 5K on City Island

On Saturday, April 19, 2014, the second annual Jersey Mike Rock + Run was held on City Island, where participants ran and/or walked in support of the K+L Guardian Foundation. The event was a huge success, with nearly 600 participants, food trucks, subs from Jimmy Johns, and beer provided by Al Kominski of Al’s of Hampden/Pizza Boy Brewery. The K+L Guardian Foundation was created after the sudden passing of Jersey Mike Van Jura, a local music advocate and pioneer in helping create a local music scene in the area. The beneficiaries of the foundation are his children, but this year they wanted to help another family suffering through the loss of a parent.

Brewin up a Cure! at the Vineyard at Hershey

On Sunday, April 13, 2014, a local American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life Team held Brewin’ up a Cure! at the Vineyard and Brewery at Hershey. The event was centered around guests getting to sample many different homebrews and vote for their favorite at this first ever Homebrewfest and Competition. The local Americana Blues-Punk band JT and The Mild Heat performed before the winners were announced at the end of the event. Proceeds raised that the event benefited the American Cancer Society.

Theatre Harrisburg Presents Sweeney Todd

On Friday, April 25, 2014, Theatre Harrisburg will hold its opening night for the production of Stephen Sondheim’s musical masterpiece, Sweeney Todd, starring Anthony Leukus and Rebecca Mease, on stage at the Whitaker Center in downtown Harrisburg.

This well-known tale is set in 19th Century England, where Benjamin Barker returns after a 15 year imprisonment. He disguises himself by using the name Sweeney Todd and returns to England with the vow of revenge on the judge who sentenced him, then the rest of the world. In his pursuit, he befriends the town pie-maker Mrs. Lovett and opens a barbershop above her bakery, where he executes his customers by slitting their throats then sends their bodies to her to be baked into meat pies.

Central Pennsylvania Comic Con held at the Carlisle Hotel

On Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6, 2014, the Central Pennsylvania Comic Con was held in the Ember’s Convention Center at the Hotel Carlisle. During this two day event, there were special guest stars from popular comics, movies, and television shows as well booths and dealers with a lot 

of comic book collectors and collectible toy vendors. A number of guests attended in costume as their favorite 

characters for a chance to win the costume contest as well.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Red Carpet Masquerade Ball

On Saturday, March 29, 2014, the Red Carpet Masquerade Ball was held at Level 2. This masked party was put on to help benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and will include a silent auction, raffle, WHTM27’s Josh Reed as the emcee, and other fun events such as a silent auction featuring local art, wine baskets, designer jewelry, vacations and many other great items.

MODE at Large: St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Downtown Harrisburg

The Capital Region Association of Irish and Celts (CRAIC) held the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Harrisburg on Saturday, March 22, 2104. The parade featured high school and middle school marching bands, as well as five traditional Irish Pipe Bands. The 

Grand Marshall for the event was Mayor Eric Papenfuse and the  

Honorary Grand Marshall was Stephanie Foose, General Manager of Crown Plaza.

On Thursday, March 27, 2014, The Mount Hill Tavern in Harrisburg hosted the event, Taste of Derby Day. The event featured incredible food dishes and an introduction to the 2014 Derby Day event that will also be held at The Mount Hill Tavern. During the event, guests were able to mix and mingle, enjoy a performance by Little Brother, and were able to purchase advance discounted tickets to this year’s Derby Day.

The thought of it calls to mind Judy Garland singing “Over the Rainbow,” or the blubbering, comical Cowardly Lion. And who can forget those cringe-worthy Winged Monkeys, minions of the green-faced, cackling Wicked Witch of the West?

Faulkner Honda presents Celebrating Week of the Young Child Walk

On Sunday, April 6, 2014, from 1 – 4 p.m., Faulkner Honda will be presenting numerous family and child oriented events being held at Wildwood Park and Olewine Nature Center in Harrisburg.
Families can enjoy arts and crafts, explore the trails, and visit the Nature Center. They will also be able to experience Kids Cross Fit, meet Buzz Lightyear and Woody, and try the Jump Bunch activities. This event is rain or shine and will have a walk that kicks off at 1:30 p.m.

The event is sponsored by Faulkner Honda, which will be featuring a special commemorative photo for guests. Families can get their photos taken and printed on site for them to take home as a souvenir of this great event.

Hershey Symphony Orchestra Announces the 2014 Shall We Dance Benefit Gala

On Saturday, May 3, 2014, beginning at 5:30 p.m., the Hershey Symphony Orchestra will host a delightful evening of dancing and fun at the “Sound of Music” Shall We Dance Gala at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center.

The traditions of Austria and Germany will be celebrated at the black-tie optional event, which will include a dinner, formal photo opportunities, a silent auction and a variety of entertainment. Throughout the night, the Hershey Symphony Orchestra and the Hershey Symphony Big Band will perform for those wishing to dance the night away, and Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be WHP580 personality Dan Steele.
For those wishing to learn a new dance step or two, the Lancaster Liederkranz Shoe Plotters will lead traditional Austrian and German folk dances and there will be a beginners’ dance lesson. Following the lessons will be exhibition dance performances by Arthur Murray, Ballroom Break and Jessie Foster’s Ballroom Dance School.
